Demonology (Study of Demons)

Demonology is the systematic study of demons or beliefs about demons. There are a lot of misconceptions about demons and let me clear up a few. Then we will look at their origin.

There are a lot of misconceptions and false beliefs (if belief at all) about demons. Demons are absolutely real and there are many different types of demons and other entities. For example, some are high-level principalities and powers (powerful demons) while some are low-level demons which like to intereact with humans and are largely mischievous. Demons don't all look the same and they have vastly different types of personalities, represented by their often multi-faceted appearance. There are also entities (spirits) that are neither good, nor evil. They are frankly neutral and are just a created being, much like a plant, insect or animal we might see in the physical. They can also be multi-faceted (like angels) and demons can also have various hosts/Sabaoth/entities contained within them and/or attached to them. That is why the head demon (leader) in the demon-possessed man in Mark 5:1-20 (also in the book of Matthew and Luke) said "My name is Legion for we are many." I have a friend who is a powerful magician and much of what he does is with the assistance of these entities or low-level demons whom he knows well and intereacts with on a daily basis. He is able to control them because they know the various places he could potentially send them if he wanted to. There are a lot of people who have daily interactions with entities and demons (including genuine exorcists) and we can learn a lot from them. Demons are also thought to be fallen angels but I believe if those are high-level demons, and the Bible says they are in prison (Jude 6). The lower-level demons and entities that typically interact with humans bear little resemblance to angels. Demons interact with us on this earth but they also live in numerous different planes of existance. They can be summoned from different planes of existance or even levels of hell. There are vast universes of different planes of existance and even hell isn't a single place but rather a whole world of different places and planes of existance. Different cultures and religions have different perspectives on demons and call them by different names, but lets remember who these demons work for. Ultimately their purpose is to distract us from Jesus Christ so we spend eternity in hell without Him.

The origin of demons is debated as the Bible is not completely clear but there is some indication when we combine the Bible with the experiences of people who have dealt with demons. There are also some books not in the Bible which are part of the Pseudepigrapha, writings that did not make it into the Bible for numerous reasons. They discuss this topic as well but cannot be put on the same level as the Holy Bible. I will quote a few times from the Book of Enoch but it was probably not written by Enoch, and wasn't included in the Bible for several reasons.

The short answer is that demons are not one type of spirit. In the spirit realm, there is as much diversity as we have in our plant, insect and animal kingdoms. There are some spirits which look like a combination of things (e.g. part insect and part animal) as well. Lucifer has entities under his control and when he fell, they remained under his control and are what we call demons. I believe there are also neutral entities (not good or bad) as well. Some demons are also apparently from the offspring of the Nephillim (Genesis 6).

We are told in Genesis 6:1-13:

Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. And the Lord said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." There were giants [Nephilim] on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God. And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. And God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

We are told in the above passage that the "sons of God" came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them" (Genesis 6:4). The term "sons of God" in Hebrew is "bene Elohim." We know from other places the term "sons of God" (bene Elohim) refers to a group of angelic creatures (e.g. Job 1:6, "Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them," Job 2:1, "On another day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him," and Job 38:7, "When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?"). This last verse is believed to be written in a literary technique called Synonymous Parallelism, which means that the identical thing is said in two different ways. This means "morning stars" are the same as "sons of God." Satan is referred to as the "morning star" (Lucifer in Latin) which identifies him with this type of angel. I believe he was among the morning stars, the "sons of God," that sang for joy when God created the universe. These are clearly a type of angels and are described as sons (bene) of God because He directly created them. If they were human beings, it would have said "bene Adam" as opposed to "bene Elohim."

Jesus answered and said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection." - Luke 20:34-36 (KJV)

The daughters of men, however, are human. Therefore the expression "benoth Adam" is used. So we see a clear distinction between the "sons of God" created by God and the "daughters of men" created by men/mankind.

Angels, as well as other entities and demons, can absolutely be physical. The "sons of God" either were or became physical beings with male reproductive organs. The Bible clearly states that angels appeared in physical bodies. Angels appeared in physical bodies, such as the three visitors to Abraham who sat, ate, and spoke with him (Genesis 18:1–15). We would presume then that they must have had the necessary digestive systems to be able to do this. In another example (Genesis 19:1-25) angels appeared to the inhabitants of Sodom in such a form that the depraved Sodomites wanted them for homosexual relations (this is where the word sodomy comes from). Angels can also apparently appear as strangers we can mistake for humans (Hebrews 13:2). Even Jesus, after He died and went to heaven, the Bible says he came back and appeared eleven or so times over 40 days (Acts 1:3), and physically ate (e.g. Luke 24:43; Acts 1:4) and even wasn't recognized (John 21:4). In every biblical account where angels are sent by God and manifest in physical form, the Bible records them as appearing as males, therefore with gender (e.g., Gabriel, Michael, or "two men"- e.g. Luke 24:4; Acts 1:10). By the way, in Matthew 22:29-30 (also in Mark 12:24-25 and Luke 20:34-36) it states that the people and angels in heaven will not marry, but that has nothing to do with these sons of God/Watchers having sex with women.

Peter, when writing about these same angels, associates them with the times of Noah, which is the time when the sons of God came to the daughters of men.

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven other; (2 Peter 2:4-5)

The phrase "sent them to hell" uses the Greek word "tartaroo," which is a verb meaning to cast down into hell. It is believed to be related to the Greek word Tartarus from ancient Greek mythology, which was "a dark abyss, place of imprisonment of the Titans, as far below Hades as the earth is below the heavens"[1] The Titans were giants, and where we get the word "titanic" from, so this is a shadow of the same place. This is the only place in the New Testament this word is used, so it was specifically intended for these fallen angels.

In Peter's first letter he writes about these angels who became imprisoned spirits:

"For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water" (1 Peter 3:18-20 NIV).

In Jude verse 6 we read, "And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day."

Jude obviously had these "sons of God" angels in mind, because he associates these angels with the perverted people of Sodom and Gomorrah:

...these [angels] he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion... (verses 6-7)

Notice that Jude says, "In a similar way." Then he goes on to describe the sexual perversion of Sodom and Gomorrah. In other words, he says that Sodom and Gomorrah committed the similar, sexual sins of these fallen angels. He clearly links the fallen angels with sexual perversion.

According to Jude these angels "abandoned their own home." this could mean they chose to leave or it could also mean they "disrobed themselves." This could mean that they committed the sin of disrobing themselves of their celestial bodies and took the bodies of corrupted flesh so that they could have sex with the daughters of men. As we will see later, angels throughout Scripture appear in physical form (e.g. Genesis 18:1–15; Genesis 19:1-25; Hebrews 13:2).

Another related verse to these angels may be Job 4:18, "Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly" (KJV). The word for folly, תָּהֳלָה (toholah), is only found once in the Bible.

1 Peter 3:18-19 states, "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison"

The word "preached" is used but the original word "kerusso" (Strongs #2784) means to be a herald, to officiate as a herald, and to proclaim after the manner of a herald. It does not mean here to evangelize or preach in our modern sense. Jesus literally proclaimed to the spirits in prison who disobeyed during the days of Noah. Many Christians erroneously assume that the spirits refer to the dead humans of Noah's day or all the dead that never got to hear about Jesus so they could be saved. This is wrong for numerous reasons:

  • This life is the only chance we have to believe and be saved (e.g. Hebrews 9:7)
  • No one would stay in hell if they had a way out
  • This would contradict the story Jesus told in Luke 16:19-31 of Lazarus and the rich man
  • 2 Peter 2:5 describes Noah as a "preacher of righteousness." Those people did hear the gospel through Noah
  • The word "spirits" used here more commonly refers to angels.
  • These spirits are in prison. There is no reason why human spirits would be put in prison.
  • As we mentioned previously, 2 Peter uses the Greek word "tartaroó" which is not referred to anywhere else in the Bible, so it was specifically intended for these spirits. As I also mentioned, in Greek mythology, Tartarus was "a dark abyss, place of imprisonment of the Titans, as far below Hades as the earth is below the heavens." There are many different parts to heaven and this is one of them.
  • Why would Jesus single out the group of deceased humans in Noah's day to proclaim to them whatever message He gave? Why not give the message to all the dead?
  • It says specifically that they disobeyed "long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built."
  • The word for "spirits" used here in 1 Peter 3:19 is the Greek word pneumasin, a form of the word pneuma, which means "air, breath, wind." It is used in the New Testament to refer to angels (Hebrews 1:14), demons (Mark 1:23), the spirit of Jesus (Matthew 27:50), and the Holy Spirit (John 14:17). While the Bible makes it clear that human beings have spirits (Hebrews 4:12), the Bible never refers to human beings as "spirits." We have spirits, but are not spirits. God the Holy Spirit, angels, and demons do not have spirits; they are spirits. So the standard meaning of the word spirits in the phrase "spirits in prison" seems to argue for the spirits being something other than human beings.

I believe that the spirits in Noah's day, whom Christ proclaimed to, is a clear reference to the fallen angels who fornicated with the daughters of men, as well as satan and his demons. This can be the only logical and scriptural conclusion. In addition, many seers have been taken back in the spirit to see what happened and apparently satan thought he has Jesus trapped and satan called all his demons around on the third day. Jesus ended up burning them all with His light and power, which is why satan and demons look burned and so ugly. As with all things, this is not explicitly detailed in Scripture but many people have had encounters with God and have been told or shown what happened and

These "sons of God" are also found in the book of Daniel in the Bible (Daniel 4:13, 17, 23), the Book of Enoch, the Book of Jubilees (Jub. 4:15, 5:1), and other writings, and are referred to as the "Watchers" or "Grigori," which is Greek for "watchers." The watchers were, according to the Book of Enoch, dispatched to Earth to watch over the humans. They would be considered guardian angels. When we look at the various texts attributed to Enoch (e.g. 1, 2 or 3 Enoch), we see the number of watchers who descended to earth ranges from 3 to 200 to 200 myriads. In Genesis 6:2 we read "...the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose." When we compare this to other texts, it appears that they lusted after women, disrobed their spiritual bodies, and "took wives" or had sex with "all whom they chose," or all they wanted. The offspring of these unions were the Nephilim, savage giants who pillaged the earth and endangered humanity. For example this passage in 1 Enoch:

But now the giants who are born from the [union of] the spirits and the flesh shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, because their dwelling shall be upon the earth and inside the earth. Evil spirits have come out of their bodies. Because from the day that they were created from the sons of God they became Watchers: their first origin is the spiritual foundation. They will become evil upon the earth and shall be called evil spirits. The dwelling of the spiritual beings of heaven is heaven; but the dwelling of the spirits of the earth, which are born upon the earth, is in the earth. (1 Enoch 15:8-10)

A reference to the "fall of the watchers from heaven" is also found in Hebrew in the Damascus Document 2:18 echoing 1 Enoch 13:10.

It is interesting what the word Nephilim means. Many suggested interpretations are based on the assumption that the word is a derivative of Hebrew verb naphal (Strongs #5307) "to fall." Robert Baker Girdlestone [4] argued the word comes from the Hiphil causative stem, implying that the Nephilim are to be perceived as "those that cause others to fall down." Adam Clarke took it as a perfect participle, "fallen," "apostates." Ronald Hendel states that it is a passive form "ones who have fallen," equivalent grammatically to paqid "one who is appointed" (i.e., overseer), asir, "one who is bound," (i.e., prisoner) etc.[5][6]

The Nephilim (Strongs #5303) are specifically mentioned three times in the Bible, in Genesis and Numbers. In Genesis 6:4 it says, "There were giants[Nephilim] on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown." It is interesting that this verse starts "There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward..." because there are giants after the flood.

In Numbers 13:33, the other place we find this same word twice, it says, " There we saw the giants[Nephilim] (the descendants of Anak came from the giants [Nephilim]); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight." This is the story of when Moses sent the spies into Canaan, also mentioned in Deuteronomy 1:1-46 where it also describes the giants in verse 28. These are giants after the flood but we are not sure if they are the same as the giants before the Flood, even though the word Nephilim is used. Numbers 13:33 is the only passage that suggests any Anakite relationship to the Nephilim. Once again, it should be remembered that these Anakim were descendants of post-Flood people. They could not be descended from the pre-Flood Nephilim. Chapter 10 of Genesis records the "Table of Nations"; that is, the descendants of Noah's sons, and there is no mention of Anak or the Nephilim, post-Flood.

It should also be noted that the spies brought back a bad, or evil (Hebrew dibbah, "to slander, whisper, or defame") report. That report included a parenthetic insertion that the large people known as the sons of Anak were descended from the Nephilim. The NIV simply puts it as:

"We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak
come from the Nephilim…" (Num. 13:33).

At first reading, this may seem like a factual account, but it is part of the quoted false report of the spies. Of the twelve spies, only Joshua and Caleb, trusting God, were keen to enter and take possession of the land; the other ten did not want to. Because of the false report, the whole nation was too terrified to enter the Promised Land, and they turned against Moses for bringing them there. God responded:

"The Lord said to Moses, "How long will these people
treat me with contempt? … I will strike them down with a
plague and destroy them" (Num. 14:11).

How can we be sure that it was a false report? To start with, God intended to strike down all of the people with a plague for their unbelief, but Moses interceded on their behalf. However, there were some that were not going to escape God's justice. Why? Because they brought back an untruthful report. Numbers 14:36–37 says:

"Now the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who
returned and made all the congregation complain against him
by bringing a bad report of the land, those very men who
brought the evil report about the land, died by the plague
    before the Lord."

So from this passage (Numbers 13:33) it is possible that the spies did see giants, but they exaggerated, especially when they referred to the legendary Nephilim.

Another place we find giants mentioned is in Deuteronomy 3:11, but the word used for giants is Rephaim: "For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the giants.[Rephaim] Indeed his bedstead was an iron bedstead. (Is it not in Rabbah of the people of Ammon?) Nine cubits is its length and four cubits its width, according to the standard cubit." This is around 13 feet long so this guy was huge! It is interesting that as soon as this guy (and all his people) were killed and all of his land taken (Deuteronomy 3:1-11), Moses divides up the land (Deuteronomy 3:12-17) and prepares Israel to possess the promised land beyond the Jordan (Deuteronomy 3:20, 27-28). So these are obviously giants as well.

The most famous giant is a Philistine named Goliath. We read about him in 1 Samuel 17. The Bible tells us he was six cubits and a span, which is over nine feet tall. David kills him in the famous battle, as well as many of the Philistines (1 Samuel 17:52-53). Goliath apparently had a brother and four sons. In 1 Chronicles 20:4-8 we read about Goliath's brother Lahmi and a son named Sippai who are both killed. In 2 Samuel 21:15-22, we read about four Philistine giants who were sons of Goliath. It mentions Ishbi-Benob and Saph (apparently the same as Sippai who is killed in 1 Chronicles, just spelled differently). These four sons are killed. We know that the Philistines were ultimately killed by Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:8).

We do not hear about giants like this for the rest of the Bible or in history so it appears that the last of the giants were wiped out at the time of David.

The entire earth becomes completely wicked (except for Noah, his wife and sons). We read, "Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually" (emphasis mine, Genesis 6:5). That's quite an extreme if every intent was only evil! We read in Genesis 6:11, "The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth" (Emphasis mine).

The only thing that I can think of that would make every intent evil and all flesh corrupt would be the fallen angels or the Nephilim. They had reptilian seed or demonic DNA which Noah didn't have. Remember what I said earlier concerning the phrase, "and also after that" in Genesis 6:4? Notice again how the Book of Jubiliees follows the same linear progression:

"And after this they sinned against the beasts and birds, and all that moveth and walketh on the earth: and much blood was shed on the earth, and every imagination and desire of men imagined vanity and evil continually. And the Lord destroyed everything from off the face of the earth; because of the wickedness of their deeds, and because of the blood which they had shed in the midst of the earth He destroyed everything." - Jubilees 7:24,25

God then resorts to flooding the entire earth but there is one "pure" and righteous family, Noah, who is "perfect in his generations" and his family are the only people God saves. The evil disembodied souls of the giants (Nephilim) are not human souls so they do not go to heaven or hell, but rather remain on the earth and other spiritual realms, and are ultimately controlled by Satan. Again, this is not detailed in the Bible and God didn't feel it was important to tell us everything, but I believe He did tell us where the Nephilim and demons came from in these verses. There are good arguments against all other theories.

It has also been suggested that Satan was behind creating the Nephilim to pollute the human blood line and prevent the coming of the Messiah. Satan had been warned in the Garden of Eden that enmity or hostility would exist between his offspring and the offspring of the first woman (and obviously the first man, Adam). In Genesis 3:15, Satan is described as having offspring in the same context as that of the woman. Part of the curse God speaks to Satan says, "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel." Who or what else would be the seed of Satan?

Satan heard from God that the woman's offspring was going to crush his head. This "offspring" may be understood generically as all humans, but more likely it is a specific reference to Christ, who, although God, was born of a woman. Interestingly, a deeper look at the expression "offspring" reveals that most translations render the word as "seed," as in a child born in the normal manner — it can also literally refer to semen. So it possible that these "sons of God" were trying to corrupt the human line (through the daughters of Adam/men) from which the Messiah was to come, and this may be another reason that Noah and his family was spared.

Genesis 6:9 says "These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God." The first mention of the "generations" of Noah in this passage refers to his family line (Hebrew toledoth). The subsequent "perfect in his generations" means that he was without spot or blemish (tamiym) in his time or in the generation (dowr) in which he lived. The Hebrew word tamiym refers to physical, or bodily, perfection, and is the same word that was used for animals of sacrificial purity throughout the Old Testament. Perhaps it was not exclusively referring to Noah's spiritual or moral perfection. Satan has conspired on several occasions to circumvent God's plan of salvation. At the time of Moses Satan tried to kill all the Jewish males through Pharoah. At the time of the birth of Christ, Satan tried, through the evil king Herod, to kill all the male babies who were born at the predicted time and city of the birth of Christ. Satan, knowing the Old Testament prophecy in Micah 5:2, knew the time and place (Bethlehem) of the birth of Jesus. Moreover, on several occasions in history, attempts have been made to exterminate the entire Jewish race. Taking this view a little further, Hebrews 2:16 talks about the act of saving grace of Jesus Christ and reminds us that this did not involve Jesus taking on the form of angels, but human form — as a physical descendant of Abraham:

For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he
took on him the seed of Abraham. (Hebrews 2:16 KJV)

There is no salvation for angels once they have rejected God and their heavenly abode. Only the physical descendants of the first Adam can be saved via the death and resurrection of the "last Adam." Some adherents to the angelic view believe that once the human race had been genetically corrupted by angelic seed, they would have fallen outside of God's plan of salvation for the human race (note Nephilim = "fallen ones"), since we need to be the literal descendants of Adam (1 Cor. 15:21–22), the first human who brought sin into the world. If God sent the Flood and destroyed the world because of the extreme wickedness of man and because angels raised the intensity of the battle a notch or two, is it possible that fallen angels have crossed the line again? Some think that the enormous and increasing UFO/abduction activity we are seeing today is a manifestation of what Jesus foretold — "just as it was in the days of Noah." However, it may just refer to a time when fallen angels increase their deceptive practices upon mankind.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SPIRITS OF THE NEPHILIM? "The departed spirits [Rephaim or giants] tremble
Under the waters and their inhabitants." (Job 26:5 NASB).

Many speculate that the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim remained on the Earth and became what we now refer to as demons. I have heard of demons being expelled from people and claiming to be the spirits of Nephilim. The presumption is that as angelic-human hybrids, the spirits of the Nephilim would have been different from the human soul-spirit, including the ability to remain present in this world despite no longer having a physical body. This would possibly explain the desire the demons have to possess human beings, thus gaining control over a physical body, which is not easy for them to do.

So it appears that Satan rebelled and took some angels with him right after creation, then later some guardian angels "(sons of God" aka "Watchers") rebelled and mated with women. They were put in a prison/dungeon (i.e. Tartarus) and the hybrid offspring were all killed in the Flood, but had a soul-spirit that remained on earth afterward. They still seek to possess humans, but they can also possess animals and even objects. I do believe that demons will tell the truth if you command them to in Jesus' name and I have heard of demons (low-level) saying they were from the Nephilim so I believe that is some of their origin. However, there are so many, and many appear as different types of animals, objects, and very strange entities that I believe they were also created separately and Satan got control of them through trading. As far as the higher-level demons, they could very well be a type of fallen angel or other creature that rebelled with Lucifer and are now under his control. Otherwise, they would have to have been created uniquely by God and given to the Devil but that is doubtful in my mind. We just don't know for sure.

There are a number of theories for the origin of the giants after the flood. The Nephilim are only clearly presented in Genesis 6:4, before the flood. The reference in Numbers 13:33 appears to be part of the false report and if so, the spies didn't see Nephilim, but they apparently still saw giants, mostly descendants of Canaan. In Genesis 10 we read "Canaan begot Sidon his firstborn, and Heth; the Jebusite, the Amorite, and the Girgashite; the Hivite, the Arkite, and the Sinite; the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. Afterward the families of the Canaanites were dispersed. And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; then as you go toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha."

In Genesis 14:1-10 there is apparently a war between some of these nations of giants. Deuteronomy 2:20-23 says that the Ammonites called the Rephaim (giants) of Ammon "Zamzummin" and that they were as tall as the Anakim, whom the Zamzummim replaced. The Emims were also as tall as the Anakims (Deuteronomy 2:10-11). The Amorites were as tall as cedars and strong as oaks (Amos 2:9), yet Mamre the Amorite appears to have been a good giant (Genesis 14:13). Some of the giants explicitly mentioned were the Anakim, aka Emim/Zamzummim (Numbers 13:33; Deuteronomy 2:11, 20), the people in Rabbah/Ammon (Deuteronomy 3:11), the people of Argob/Bashan (Deuteronomy 3:13), and Goliath of Gath with his brother and four sons. Nimrod could have also bee na giant as Genesis 10:8, 9 in the Septuagint states, "And Chus begot Nebrod: he began to be a giant upon the earth. He was a giant hunter before the Lord God; therefore they say, As Nebrod the giant hunter before the Lord." - Genesis 10:8, 9 (LXX) In Genesis 15:12-21 we see God's covenant with Abraham to destroy several of these groups.

So where did these giants come from? There are several theories:

  • "Multiple Incursions" theory - More angels (since these angels are in the Tatarus prison/dungeon) rebelled and had sex with women, yet all of the giants post-flood are sons of other giants, no mention of angels or sons of God
  • The giant Og, the Nephilim King of Bashan, snuck aboard Noah's Ark
  • The giants after the flood had their growth inhibitor gene turned off somehow
  • There was some tainted blood (e.g. Nephilim seed may have survived in at least one (if not two) of the wives of Noah's sons), the wives came after "all flesh had corrupted" (Genesis 6:12) but God was able to kill off the offspring eventually, over 1,200 years later at the time of David.
  • Lot ended up having children by incest with his daughters (Genesis 19:36) and the daughters bore sons, the oldest bore Moab (Moabites) and the youngest bore Benammi/Ammon (Amonites). Zep 2:9 compares these people groups to the people of Sodom and Gomorrah.
  • Some have asked if there something behind the Rh (Rhesus) factor blood issue and giants. No one knows where Rh negative blood came from. Some think the angels have Rh negative blood. Perhaps angels were Rh negative (without the protein) and humans were Rh positive (with the protein), so half of the hybrids born inherited the Rh positive protein. But this is only an issue after the first pregnancy, and only if the mother's and baby's blood intermigles, so it wouldn't have killed any giants unless the mothers had more than one child. It is doubtful God would have used this to get rid of any giants but angels having Rh negative blood (when they chose to disrobe of their spiritual bodies) is a possibility. We also don't know how long the Watchers had to do this. Unrelated, the Shroud, Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano and the Sudarium (Face-Cloth) of Christ which is mentioned specifically in John 20:7 (Greek soudarion) all are said to have tested AB positive, although the blood was also said to be too degraded to test for the Rh factor.

Speaking of conspiracies, did you know there are over 1,000 elongated skulls in various museums around the world. Usually the skulls shape is a result of dolichocephaly, aka scaphocephaly, a condition where the head is longer than would be expected. Then you have skulls which are shaped when the individual is an infant, and the skull is pliable. For example, around 95% of the skulls that were found in Paracas, Peru were normal sized and had evidence of cradle headboarding. They have evidence that most of the skulls were deformed as a result of their practice of cranial shaping infants. In fact, they have found cradle cranial shaping boards. However, it is believed by some that this practice was to emulate the apparent hybrids who had completely different, yet elongated skulls. Because we know they practiced cranial shaping, it is doubtful that the genetic trait of the elongated cranium faded as fewer and fewer of the Paracas people existed. The hybrid skulls (about 5% of the ones found in Paracas) are around 60% heavier, have around 30% more cranial volume, have larger eye sockets, and in a few cases are 2.5 times larger than average skulls. They don't have any evidence of sagittal sucture and have only one parietal plate. Human skulls almost always have two parietal plates and sagittal suctures. They have even found a fetus estimated to be 7 months old enclosed in the womb of a mummy of a pregnant woman here, and the skull of the fetus was elongated as well.

After genetic testing in early 2014 by a geneticist in Texas, DNA segments were compared to the GenBank (the global database of all human and animal DNA), and some segments didn't match anything Homo Sapien, Neanderthal or Denisovan. Brien Foerster, a leading expert on the Paracas skulls, reported, "It had mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) with mutations unknown in any human, primate, or animal known so far." "But a few fragments I was able to sequence from this sample indicate that if these mutations will hold we are dealing with a new human-like creature, very distant from Homo sapiens, Neanderthals and Denisovans." The geneticist who ran the sequencing was not told the history of these samples in advance, to ensure that he would examine the samples without any preconceived notions. What he found was absolutely shocking. The geneticist stated, "Whatever the sample labeled 3A has came from – it had mtDNA with mutations unknown in any human, primate or animal known so far. The data are very sketchy though and a LOT of sequencing still needs to be done to recover the complete mtDNA sequence. But a few fragments I was able to sequence from this sample 3A indicate that if these mutations will hold we are dealing with a new human-like creature, very distant from Homo sapiens, Neanderthals and Denisovans. I am not sure it will even fit into the known evolutionary tree. The question is if they were so different, they could not interbreed with humans. Breeding within their small population, they may have degenerated due to inbreeding."

They are currently (May 2014) still genetically testing so we will see what comes of this. It could be a hoax (like the Atacama Mystery from Chile which is just a 15 week or so old fetus) or it could be that some of these people were what Genesis 6 spoke of when it says "There were giants [Nephilim] on the earth in those days, and also afterward" (Genesis 6:4).

A lot of people try to lump all of God's spirit beings into just angels and demons but this is clearly not the case.

For example, God created different "orders" or "choirs" of angels. Some of the groupings include:

  • The Seraphim at God's throne (Isaiah 6:1-7)
  • The Cherubim which guard the throne and guarded the way to the tree of life (Genesis 3:24; Exodus 25:17–22; 2 Chronicles 3:7–14; Ezekiel 10:12–14, 28:14–16; 1 Kings 6:23–28; and Revelation 4:6–8).
  • The Ophanim aka "wheels" or "thrones" (Ezekiel 10:17; Daniel 7:9; Colossians 1:16; Revelation 11:16).

    Others could include:

  • The seven spirits of God that stand before the throne described in the Book of Enoch, and in the Book of Revelation 1:5 (Thought by some to be seven Archangels).

Then there are groupings which are more vague, with the lowest "order" or "choir" being angels (malakhim).

  • "far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come" (Ephesians 1:21).
  • "principalities and powers in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 3:10).
  • The Archangel Michael "one of the chief princes" (Daniel 10:13) (and others like possibly Gabriel) (1 Thessalonians 4:16 and Jude 1:9)
  • Angels (malakhim) can also apparently appear as humans (Hebrews 13:2)

Likewise, Satan's kingdom of evil spirits has some sort of hierarchy but Scripture understandably doesn't go into detail. Ephesians 6:12 states, "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places." 1 Timothy 4:1 states, "The Spirit clearly says that in latter times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons (emphasis mine). It appears that Satan was an anointed cherub and that he now has high-level principalities/powers that fight with Michael and the other archangels, travel throughout various planes of existance, and oversee lower level demons which are largely mischievous entities which communicate with each other and humans well, but aren't very smart, unlike angels. I have participated in expelling demons and have read hundreds of accounts, and the demons don't act very intelligent and don't resememble angels at all. They sometimes whine, pout, beg and say foolish things. This is one of the reasons aside from Scripture that I believe demons are not angels but are rather disembodied spirits from the Flood, created from the sons of God/watchers and women in Genesis 6:1-13. This is apparently the oldest belief among the Jewish people and apparently one that the apostles held to as well. They could have also been created separately and I believe it is a combination of both of these theories. There is just way too much variety to all of these entities - orbs of light, fog-like with glowing eyes, animal-like, objects like a floating eyeball, etc.

Feel free to check out my related articles on the right. A lot more information can also be found from an Internet search but I wanted to explain what demonology was and explain that demons probably aren't angels turned bad. There is much we don't know but that is a good thing. We need to focus on what our Heavenly Father tells us to, and like everything else He asks of us, it is clearly best.
