"Then the LORD came down in
the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the
LORD. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the
LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding
in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands [of
generations], and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he
does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and
their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth
generation." -Ex. 34:5-7
"I knew you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and
abounding in love..." -Jonah 4:2
"This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead
on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be
preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." -Lk.
24:47
"For where two or three come together
in my name, there am I
with them." -Matt. 18:20
"I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have
been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am
going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so
that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for
anything in my name, and I will do it." -John 14:12-14
"I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my
name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and
you will receive, and your joy will be complete. Though I have been
speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use
this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. In
that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask
the Father on your behalf. No, the Father himself loves you because
you have loved me..." -John 16:23b-27a
"...Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name - the name you
gave me - so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with
them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave
me..." -John 17:11b-12a
"Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which
are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that
Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in
his name." -John 20:30,31
Have you ever heard the phrase
"in Jesus' Name?" Perhaps you tag it at the end of all of your
prayers... There is a very good reason why that is said but it must
be understood to have significance. You see, names have a tremendous
significance. Do you know what your name means? To God, names are
very important and a quick survey of the Bible would make that point
very clear. Well, the same goes for prayer and the Scriptures I
provided above make this clear. When we pray "in Jesus' Name," it
means we are praying according to His nature, and this was clearly
proclaimed in Exodus 34, in the first Scripture I provided above.
God tells Moses He will proclaim His Name in front of him and He
says:
"The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate
and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,
maintaining love to thousands [of generations], and forgiving
wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty
unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin
of the fathers to the third and fourth generation."
Keep in mind, this is God describing Himself! Summarize God in
two sentences and this is what you get. We know from the New
Testament that Jesus said He had the same nature, for He said "I and
the Father are one" (John 10:30). So when we pray "in Jesus' Name,"
it has to be according to the nature of God as revealed in Exodus
34:5-7 (as well as the rest of the Bible), and if it is, it is a
prayer that very well may be His will to answer. The key is that He
hear it and there are a number of things which block our prayers,
namely sin (Is 59:1,2 and others). Get right with Him and then start
looking for results as you pray "in Jesus' Name" as there is great
power in that Name! You have HIS NAME on it!!!
